New Music Abounds on WOWD
2017 was an excellent year for music. The Philadelphia-based indie band The War On Drugs, led by singer/songwriter Adam Granduciel, released “A Deeper Understanding.” WOWD programmer Gayle Berens, host of Night Ride Home (Sundays 8-10pm), considers this a favorite release of 2017. Rolling Stone says, “Granduciel achieves full-on sonic rapture - an abstract-expressionist mural of synth-pop and heartland rock colored by bruised optimism and some of his most generous, incandescent guitar ever.” Here’s “Holding On” by The War On Drugs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-oHBkikDBg.
Michael Shereikis, co-host of Jolly Papa (Wednesdays 1-3pm), has a long list of 2017 favorites. One is Les Amazones d'Afrique, an all-female collective of Malian musicians campaigning for gender equality. Here is “Doona” featuring singer Mamani Keita: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nL5Yek_rSTM
Roberto Tapia, host of South American Beats (Fridays 7-8pm), calls attention to “Vives" by Colombian musician Carlos Vives. Hear the full album here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W1RdxEXtn1k.
