WOWD Celebrates BLACK HISTORY MONTH
WOWD celebrates and practices diversity in its programmers and its programming, and during February takes special note of the struggles and achievements of African-Americans.
Here are just some of the Black History Month features during our February programs:
-- SOUND OF SOUL (2/7, 2/21) includes segments spotlighting Black inventors and entrepreneurs
-- COIL PROJECT (2/14, 2/28) includes Monologues of the Black Experience
-- TALK OF TAKOMA (every Sunday) topics include Neighbors Inc., a group that worked for integration in Takoma DC
-- GET UP includes interviews with authors of books about Martin Luther King and the Kennedys (2/1) and about boxer Joe Frazier (2/15)
-- WHAT’S UP NEXT’S theme (2/8) is The Pioneers, Radicals, and Fearless Who Changed Music Forever
-- BLUES COME CALLING features Knoxville blues (2/2) and talks with Phil Wiggins about DC blues history (2/14)
-- BLUES HALL OF FAME (2/9) and TUESDAY MORNING MIX (2/16) cover the history of pioneering Black-owned record labels
-- ROCK & ROLL RABBIT HOLE (2/2) makes a Mothership Connection with the funk-meisters of Parliament/Funkadelic
-- EPIC CITY features classical music in honor of social change, with libretto by Carolivia Herron (2/9) and readings from Black author Charles Chesnutt (2/16)
-- HOT SAUCE LOUNGE (2/18) highlights soul music covers of pop music
-- MUSIC MATINEE (2/4) focuses on movies by Black filmmakers
-- MUSICAL REMEDIES (2/4) presents a sonic tonic of Jazz, Hip-Hop, and Afro-Punk
--BALLADS IN THE MORNING (2/5) Severn presents storytelling songs and ballads by Black folksingers
-- THIS MUSIC (2/27) Bobby Hill and guest Matthew Shipp feature Black Mystery School Pianists
--RISE UP (2/20) Olivia features children’s music celebrating Black culture and artists
-- ROOTS ROCK REGGAE presents a Bob Marley tribute (2/6) and explores reggae as Black history (2/20)
-- DIVINO MARAVILHOSO – (every Saturday) explores African roots of music from Brazil, the Americas, and the Caribbean
