Thank you for supporting Takoma Radio during our March Forth fundraising week. The love that surrounds this baby community radio station is palpable. During an Open Studio special on Friday March 9th, guest deejay Jim Fellows shared classic ukulele songs and waxed eloquent about WOWD. 

   “As a bigtime listener, my sense of community has greatly changed since the station came on the air.  What I can give to WOWD is of much smaller value than what I get back.  This station embodies a spirit of friendliness, generosity, and inclusiveness. Saturday mornings on WOWD will be extra bright and shiny starting in March with the introduction of WOWD’s two seminal children’s programs, Rise Up and Robin’s Radio Show.

Premiering on March 17th at 8am, Robin’s Radio Show, hosted by Robin Porter, showcases music and stories for kids of all ages.

On alternating Saturday mornings, Rise Up - hosted by WOWD’S Development Director Olivia Ellis Randolph and Takoma Park Kindermusik teacher (and co-host of Saturday night's Roots and Wings) Becky Linafelt - features curated music and local children’s voices singing and talking about the topic of the day.

In celebration, we’re rolling out WOWD kid T’s! The larger youth sizes will fit some adults who like a slimmer fit. Youth shirts are $15. Email Trex@TakomaRadio.org to arrange mailing or pick up.

Sisters of the District Revolution (Reets and Victoria) turn the Takoma Radio studio over to DMV Underground (Cardo and Booka) at 11pm on a recent Monday night. Every night of the week. there’s eclectic late-night programming, including hip hop, freeform, ambient, world beat, metal, jazz, and more on 94.3 and TakomaRadio.org.

Takoma Radio is a project of Historic Takoma Inc.  Community radio is the latest vehicle for Historic Takoma (HTI) to engage with the public, and showcase and preserve the history of Takoma Park, Maryland and Takoma D.C.  Since its inception as a non-profit in 1977, HTI has been dedicated to education, outreach, and preservation. At HTI headquarters (7328 Carroll Avenue), there are extensive archives including photographs, maps, documents of all kinds, oral histories, artifacts, and a storefront window with an ever-changing display related to the community. Another important way HTI engages with the community is through its annual House & Garden Tour (Sunday May 6, 2018.) Takoma Radio reporters are always there, gathering audio on deep Takoma history.  Each house has a story. Voices of the present reflect in various way on the past.

The Takoma community is an iridescent cloth woven together from families and individuals of different backgrounds and cultures. Takoma Radio shines a light on that fabric, informing and connecting residents. Shows like Talk of Takoma, Somos Takoma, Meet Your Neighbor, Epic City, D.C. Roots of Music, Forbidden Alliance and others align with Historic Takoma’s mission to collect and preserve local stories.
