WOWD Celebrates Black History Month

WOWD celebrates and practices diversity in its programmers and its programming, and during February takes special note of the struggles and achievements of African-Americans.

Here are just some of the Black History Month features during our February programs:

GUITAR ARCADE - Patrick celebrates Black History Month with an all-soul episode (2/27)

HI-FI DINER - Lis plays selections from Analog Africa compilations, encompassing 60s through 80s Edo Funk, AfroFunk, AfroBeat, and more (2/13)

HIGH-N-LOW - Urbanowa plays Black alt- and indie-rock artists (2/27)

HOT SAUCE LOUNGE - DJ Special Sauce celebrates Black History Month by playing an hour of soulful covers of Beatles songs (2/2)

LOST TREASURES -DJ Bookish plays topical music by Black artists of past generations, from the blues to Vietnam  (2/18). DJ Mackie explores the legacy of two DC black-owned recording studios of the 1960s (2/25).

MUSIC MATINEE - DJ Total plays music from films of Black directors (2/16)

MUSICAL REMEDIES - Madona spotlights Afrofuturism and Afropunk (2/16)

RIDE WITH CLYDE - The DJ Driver curates a playlist based on the book And Still I Rise, a chronicle of modern Black history

RISE UP - Olivia features children’s music celebrating Black culture and artists (2/4)

ROOTS & WINGS - Becky honors the "godmother" of rock & roll, gospel-singing guitarist Sister Rosetta Tharpe (2/4), Chris will do a deep dive into the impact of Black artists on all genres of American Roots music (2/25). 

ROCK AND ROLL RABBIT HOLE - "The Rabbit Hole Got Soul" with Walter and Scott (2/21)

ROOTS ROCK REGGAE - Bob Marley's birthday (2/4),  21st century reggae (2/11)

Starting Monday, January 30:


RIDE WITH CLYDE airs Monday MORNINGS on WOWD from 8:00-10:00 AM (shifting from Monday nights).
Michael Causey shifts to Monday EVENINGS (biweekly) 8:00-9:00 PM (with his show now called A GOOD HOUR).

COMO LA FLOR moves to biweekly! Join Valentina as she shares Latinx music, highlighting marginalized artists rarely heard on radio, every other Monday from 7:00 - 8:00 PM.


DAYS HAVE GONE BY with Matt Bormet airs every other Monday night from 9:00-11:00 PM (shifting from his prior late night Thursday slot).

Monday January 23 is the last broadcast of Michael Causey's original show (GET UP) at 8:00 AM; he'll mark the occasion by playing his all-time favorite songs. January 23 is also the last nighttime broadcast of RIDE WITH CLYDE at 9:00 PM.

Tune in to pop-up specials during our week-long year-end fund drive, beginning Friday, December 2!

We welcome Weasel back to the WOWD studios on Friday, Dec 2 to talk with Marika and Steve about the past, present, and future of community radio from 11 'til noon.

Sunday December 4, we've got a Broadway matinee with Peter and Maureen at 3pm.

Next Tuesday, DJ Bookish will do an hour of all 45s at 2, followed by Scandinavian music with Charlie Pilzer at 3.

And on Thursday December 8th, a special edition of The Infinite Number of Monkeys Show at 6.
